Help on navigation - Side Buttons

The buttons on the left side of the screen cover the main sections or chapters of this presentation.

This section covers a short history of printing, and an introduction to current printing technologies. It also explains some of the current technological issues.

This section introduces the unique benefits of digital printing and introduces new visitors to variable data printing. Rather than talking from a technological standpoint it covers the subject with a view to explaining how marketeers can use digital printing to develop revolutionary new sales tools.

This section covers the key benefits and differences to traditional printing in more detail, with sections on short run printing, variable data printing, data mining and the ability of digital presses to print a wider range of colours than traditional printing.

This section deals with how a modern digital press works, in this case the IBM InfoColor 70. For those who like lots of technical detail, there are also more technical descriptions of the technology.

This section is for designers and specificiers who wish to learn about using this new technology to its best.

Repurposing this presentation

This presentation has been designed so that it can be used as the following:-

CD ROM multimedia presentation

A loose leaf book

A web site

It has also been designed so that IBM InfoColor customers can re-purpose the presentation for their own use. To that end, the high resolution and vector images are included on this CD.

There is also a "blank" version of this presentation, which users can create their own version of this presentation by simply creating a bit map of their logo, without the need to know anything about HTML programming.

We hope to be adding sections to this presentation as new developments arise. These will be available for down load from the IBM Printing Systems (UK) web site.

It is recommended that Apple Macintosh users select the files in Adobe Illustrator 5, these will work on both platforms as will the Quark XPress files.
The MS Word text can be easily imported into Quark and many other packages.

To add your own logo to the presentation, first import your logo into Adobe Photoshop, and use a 20% black (gray) background.

Click on "Image", then select "Image size" and select a bit map size of
101 x 69 pixels. Allow for some space around the logo. When you are happy with the result, choose "export" from under the "file" menu, then choose GIF 89a,  click ok, save the result as logo.gif.

Next copy the files from the cd in the folder called "Userbook" onto a directory on your hard disk. Now copy the logo.gif file you have created  into this directory. Run the file default.html in your web browser and you should see that the original IBM logo has been replaced with your companies logo.

The fonts used in the IBM version of the presentation are IBM Bodini and IBM Helvetica Black and IBM Helvetica Light.

The font used in the Userbook version is Symbol Black.

The pages were built using HTML Frames. To edit the page content look for the relevant file body_XXXX.html, where XXXX is the page name. The pages can be edited using Netscape Composer or a similar package.

To build any additional titles use a 20% gray box of 283 x 21 pixels. Add the text in Symbol Black. Then increase the size of the image using Photoshop
"Image" then "canvas size" to 288 and 26 pixels you should do expand the size from the top right direction, giving a white border of 5 pixels at the bottom and the left hand side of the title. Next use gaussian blur to add a 5 pixel drop shadow.

To create a web site using this presentation, send all the files from the Userbook folder plus your logo.gif file to your service provider. The service provider needs to know that the index page is called default.html and that you are using long filenames.

For more detailed technical explanations on the coding e-mail us, quoting IBM Printing Systems presentation CD in the subject field.
